Went to Changi Prison today to see how our Pizza Hut Warm Chocolate cake is made. KFC and Pizza Hut are active supporters of the Yellow Ribbon Project, so we always join SCORE to help give jobs to convicts, educating and giving them a 2nd chance in life.
The moment I entered the prison, I have mixed feelings. It was a little sadness, a tinge of regret, pityness and a little nervous. I remembered my interview there, where I nearly got a job as a prison officer and had to forgo it as I found out I was 2 mths pregnant. My heart was saying "This is where you belong...". Oh my! I was so torn. But I know that was the past. I'm now a mother and I wanna go home and be with my daughter... I can't afford to have a 12-hour shift job and not being able to see her for 2 days in a row... My heart sank deeper when I saw the prison officers... boo hoo hoo. Also, I was sad as the prison reminded me of my cousin and a friend who are serving their 7 year sentence for drug abuse and also for the convicts there. I pity the family members whom I saw coming to visit their loved ones. Some of their wives are pregnant or have little kids and babies ... I pity the innocent kids having to grow up without a father figure.
The place has a sombre atmosphere. The lighting was faint, there were walls and concrete everywhere. Despite it all, the prison will have a special place in my heart.
At the production room, we get to taste various cakes and pastries. The convicts are a talented bunch. I was given a cute and tiny birthday cake! Gosh, I was so touched. It was so nice of the chef. In fact, the convicts wanted to sing me a birthday song but they aren't allowed too. Awww so sweet of the guys. See, even people like that can be nice. I have never looked down on these people as I know deep in my heart they are still human and can still feel emotions, its just that they are born with weaknesses. My heart reach out to them. I hope that they will change for the better and move on with life. This also goes to my dear cousin and friend. Life have so much to offer!
Overall, I had a wonderful birthday at the prison! It was a memorable 23th birthday! :)
I'll miss the prison.
